The [ASX order book series](/blog/2026/10/12-reading-the-asx-order-book-how-intraday-traders-actually-find-edge/) has so far been about techniques: how to read the book, size, manage risk and handle the psychology. The last special topic was about [why paid signal groups fail](/blog/2026/11/07-why-paid-signal-groups-fail/). These final posts are about traders themselves.

When I started reading several Australian traders' public journals, I expected to find one recipe for success. Instead I found two very different shapes of profitable trader, with a lot of shared craft underneath. I'll describe them as **archetypes**: composites built from patterns, not portraits of anyone. Real traders mix both, and drift between them over a career.

## The liquidity harvester

The harvester makes money by collecting many small, fast edges.

A harvester's day is front-loaded. Most of the work happens before and just after the open: overnight leads, candidate lists, auction reads, quick entries, quick exits. By mid-morning, a disciplined harvester is often done.

**Where harvesters shine:** consistency. Green days are the norm, losing streaks are short, and drawdowns are shallow when discipline holds. The edge compounds through volume.

**Where harvesters break:** the single big loser. A harvester's average win is small, so one averaged-down disaster can erase weeks. Costs are a constant drag, so a small decline in setup quality turns the whole business unprofitable. And harvesters can get stuck on a plateau, with a high win rate but a payoff that never grows, because they scale out of winners too early.

**How harvesters grow:** by improving payoff without sacrificing win rate. Holding winners longer in their best setups, sizing up A-grade auction reads, cutting the marginal trades that mostly feed the broker. ## The catalyst sniper

The sniper makes money by waiting for a small number of high-conviction situations and hitting them hard.

A sniper's day is mostly waiting. Reading, watching, preparing scenarios, and then acting decisively when something genuinely mispriced appears: hitting the auction on day-one news, adding as the trade confirms, holding part of the position into a second day.

**Where snipers shine:** asymmetry. A handful of trades can make a month or a year. Commission drag is low because trade count is low.

**Where snipers break:** conviction is a double-edged sword. The same willingness to size up and hold that makes the big wins possible also makes it possible to hold a losing conviction trade far too long, which, as the [averaging-down post](/blog/2026/10/24-the-averaging-down-death-spiral/) explained, is how almost every catastrophic loss happens. Snipers also struggle in quiet markets, when there's nothing worth shooting at, and the temptation is to manufacture trades.

**How snipers grow:** by becoming more selective, not less. The best stretches for this archetype tend to be the ones with the fewest trades. Hard rules (a daily trade cap, hard stops, a maximum loss per position) let them keep the conviction while cutting off the tail risk.

## The shared core

Different as they are, the two archetypes share almost everything in the earlier tracks of this series:

- Both trade **stocks in play** and ignore the rest.
- Both use the **order book** to time entries. Even the sniper's best intraday entries are auction reads with protection behind them.
- Both live and die by **sizing discipline** and **cutting losers**.
- Both keep detailed **journals** and track their statistics.
- Both find that the **morning** carries the most information.
- Both go through the same [apprenticeship curve](/blog/2026/10/27-the-apprenticeship-curve/).

The difference is mostly in what they do with a good read: the harvester takes a small, quick, repeatable profit from it, and the sniper waits for the rare read that's worth a large, patient bet.

## Which one are you?

A rough self-check:

The worst place to be is in the middle without knowing it: taking sniper-sized positions on harvester-quality setups, or scalping out of sniper-quality catalysts for a tick. Many of the mistakes in the journals came from exactly that confusion, at least early on.

## Drift is normal

Neither archetype is permanent. A harvester who builds sector knowledge often starts holding catalyst trades longer. A sniper who builds auction skills often adds quick intraday trades between the big ones. Over long careers, the traders I read tended to keep their original core skill and bolt the other style onto it, rather than switching completely.
